Canes Baseball Has a Huge Series VS. Virginia Starting Tonight

The Canes kickoff the first of 3 games against Virginia Thursday night at the Light. Virginia is 43-9 and looking to close out as the top team in the ACC, needing only one win against the Canes. The Canes are coming into a 17 game winning streak at home and are hoping to extend it with the hot bats of Yasmani Grandal, Chris Pelaez, Harold Martinez, Nathan Melendres and others.

Georgia Tech and Miami both need to sweep their series to take over the top ACC spot this weekend, this will be a daunting task. If the Canes can keep their pitching under control and stay away from giving up the late inning runs we might have a chance. Virginia is a strong team however and they will put up a fight. Not to mention Virginia has won 14 straight games coming into the series, so the Canes will need to deflate their confidence by giving them a loss tonight.

The big guns for the Cavaliers are Phil Gosselin who is batting (.386, 7 HR, 47 RBI), Jarrett Parker (.337, 8 HR, 48 RBI) and Steven Proscia (.325, 8 HR, 55 RBI).

Yasmani Grandal leads the ACC in hitting at (.432), with a slugging percentage of (.784) and on-base percentage (.555). Yesterday he was named as a semi-finalist for the Johnny Bench Award. Nathan Melendres has a hot bat coming into the series as well with a 10 game hitting streak.Miami pitching has the lowest ERA in the ACC, so if we can keep the runs low this weekend we should put up a great series.

Chris Hernandez is starting for the Canes Friday night, Thursday game starts at 7pm.

Friday the game starts at 7pm, and the final game is Saturday at 12 noon.
