Virginia Hands The Canes An Untimely Loss, 7-3

The Canes have officially put themselves into quite a difficult position going into the ACC tournament after losing 2 out of 3 to Virginia. It looks like the Canes just might be playing our top in-state rivals in the first round. As of today it looks like we might get paired up against Florida State to start the ACC tournament and if we are inconsistent with our hitting as we were this weekend we will be in trouble.

(We will talk about the upcoming ACC tournament in another post very soon).

Back to the game....

Virginia jumped all over us today which is exactly opposite of what needed to happen because we never closed the gap. We stranded baserunner after baserunner, 6 in the first 3 innings. We failed to come through in clutch situations many times this afternoon. Virginia was just, well, incredibly average. Oh yeah, they did rack us for 7 runs. Other than that though, they did nothing really superb other than just play consistent baseball which the Hurricanes did not do at all this series.

David Gutierrez started strong with 4 strikeouts in the first 2 innings but it was completely overshadowed by the 2 runs he gave up in the first and the 2 runs in the second which gave the Cavaliers all the padding they needed. Danny Hultzen pitched for the Cavaliers and allowed two runs on four hits from the Canes. This was once again a weak hitting performance from the Canes whose bats really let them down the last half of this series unfortunately.

So the Cavaliers overall looked consistent but they didn't look like the #1 seed in the nation. The ACC tournament is about to get real exciting for baseball fans and Canes fan. It is time to rise to the occasion, or we will be left behind very quickly..

More to come on the ACC TOURNEY>>
