Miami Hurricane Baseball: Canes Take On Texas A/M Today

The Miami Hurricanes take on Texas A&M today, Saturday June 5, 2010 at 4pm eastern time. Texas A&M smashed FIU on Friday 17-3 with a powerful display of run scoring which saw 4 homeruns from A&M. If what we saw today from Texas A&M was what we can expect tomorrow, we are going to have our hands full to say the least. It was nice that we put up 11 un-awnswered runs today and ended with 12, but Dartmouth still rallied to put 8 runs on the board late in the game. This type of late game scoring is unacceptable and unfortunately typical of the Canes season thus far.

The Canes have more than 10 games decided this season in the last inning of the game and more than 15 games within the last 3 innings. 60% of these games had the Hurricanes leading by more than 2 runs coming into the 7th inning. Giving our opponents the opportunity to make late game comebacks is absolutely destroying any run building we do early on, and today that was evident. While everyone was celebrating early how dominating we were with 11 runs on the board, we let them comeback and tack 8 runs on in the final 4 innings. That will not win us a NCAA championship and it will kill us with teams like Texas A&M, Virginia, Georgia Tech and so on.

Today's game is all about low scoring.

The Canes need to limit Texas A&M to less than 5 runs; and ideally 3 or less in order to be comfortable. Texas A&M has proven they have ample hitting potential throughout their lineup and the Canes have proven that even 10 runs is not enough to win games this year. We are looking for Chris Hernandez to be lights out today coming in with a 3.02 era. We need Chris to limit them to less than 3 runs in at least 6 innings, but 7 would be great. In fact if we get 7 innings out of Chris Hernandez today, we will win the game. We will go out on a limb and say with confidence, if Chris Hernandez pitches into the 7th inning today the Canes will win the game.

Once again we need Zeke Devoss to step up and get on base, plain and simple. He needs to shine today, and, going forward in the rest of the postseason. He needs to produce lead off hits and steal bases of which he has more than 40 this year. Michael Broad and Nathan Melendres could continue to be a big factor in the Canes scoring as they are proving to be great RBI deliverers. This game will not disappoint and Canes fans need to be ready to rumble...
